Shubman Gill’s first assignment as a test captain will be one of the toughest challenges.
Newly appointed Indian Cricket Team skipper Shubman Gill shared his take on the lessons that he got from playing under Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. His statement came ahead of the test series against the England Cricket Team, which will begin on 20th June.
Shubman Gill was recently appointed as the test skipper of the Indian Cricket Team. His appointment came after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format of the game. The young batter was preferred over Jasprit Bumrah, who didn’t get the role due to injury concerns and workload management.
Shubman Gill’s first assignment as a test captain will be one of the toughest challenges as India is set to take on England in the five-match series. The series will also be part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle and the team would want to start on a high.
Shubman Gill will have huge shoes to fill as a test captain. Under Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the team was dominant, and the young batter would want to follow the same path and take the team to glory.
Rohit is very aggressive in terms of his tactics – Shubman Gill
While talking about Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill said that the ODI skipper is very aggressive tactically. While sharing his experience playing under him, he said:
“It can seem like he is not aggressive, but Rohit is very aggressive in terms of his tactics. He is someone who is very clear with his communication prior to the matches, during the series and even after the series, what he wants from the players.”
“The kind of environment Rohit bhai kept, even if Rohit bhai is swearing at you, you would not take it to your heart. That’s just kind of his personality. I think that’s a great trait to have. He’s firm, but even if he’s being hard on you, you know that it’s not coming from his heart. It’s coming from a team perspective,” Shubman Gill told Sky Sports.
Shubman Gill also talked about playing under Virat Kohli, saying that his proactiveness in the test is something that he picked up. He added:
“When I played under Virat, I think his proactiveness in Test matches with the field or with the ideas or with his thinking was something that I liked and that I picked up. If he thinks that, okay, this plan is not working, he would immediately have another plan, communicate to the bowler what he wants from them,” he concluded.
