Shubman Gill will begin his ODI captaincy tenure from India’s tour of Australia later this month.

New India ODI captain Shubman Gill has revealed how he came to know about the change in the leadership role. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the Indian squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, where it was revealed that Shubman Gill will replace Rohit Sharma as the India ODI captain.

The announcement also revealed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were included in the ODI squad and will don the India jersey for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy win in March 2025. The duo has not played any cricket since then, apart from Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, having retired from T20Is last year and from tests in May this year.

Gill’s elevation to ODI skipper is considered part of a larger transformation under head coach Gautam Gambhir, with the team focusing on long-term planning and squad continuity.

Obviously is a big responsibility: Shubman Gill reveals he came to know of his ODI captaincy during the Ahmedabad test against West Indies

Shubman Gill indicated that he was aware of the major development. He was told of his appointment to the job just before the first test against the West Indies, despite the fact that the official announcement was made immediately after the test, which India won in two and half days.

The 25-year-old will take over as captain of the ODI side from Rohit Sharma, and he will lead the team in the next ODI series against Australia later this month.

“Yes, it was announced in the middle of a Test match, but I got to know a little before that. It obviously is a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. So, very excited to lead my country in that format,” Gill said two days ahead of the second Test in Delhi.

Gill, who has also been leading India in tst cricket, called the past few months a whirlwind but insisted that his focus is now fully on the future.

The last few months have been very exciting for me. But I’m really looking forward to what the future has. I want to stay as present as possible and don’t really want to look back on what I’ve been able to achieve or what we as a team have been able to achieve. Just want to look forward and win everything that we have in the upcoming months,” he stated.

The Australia ODI series will begin in Perth on October 19.
