Shubman Gill breaks silence on captaincy pressure ahead of SL vs IND Test series

Shubman Gill is the third fastest test captain to reach 1000 runs.
India are ready for their next Test assignment, as they are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in a two-match series. The first game is all set to begin at 10 AM IST on August 15 at Galle International Stadium.
Shubman Gill will lead India in this crucial series, in which the team will aim to improve their current standing on the World Test Championship 2025-27 points table. They are placed fifth on the table with a PCT of 48.15.
Before the one-off Test against Afghanistan, India suffered a 0-2 whitewash at home against South Africa. Gill has been exceptional with the bat since taking over the captaincy. He has scored 1,076 in 9 Tests, with six centuries and one half-century.
Team India drew the England series 2-2 last year, but they have yet to achieve a significant series win under his captaincy. Gill has dismissed all claims regarding the pressure of captaincy and is pleased with India’s progress under his leadership in recent times.
Gill opens up on the captaincy pressure query at conference
India have been a little inconsistent in Test cricket over the past few years. Under Gill, India missed a chance to win the Test series in England. The solitary Test series win as captain for Gill came against the dejected West Indies at home.
Is Gill under pressure before the SL vs IND Test series? Well, the Indian captain has responded to the query at the pre-match conference. He denied such claims and said that he is happy with the progress India have shown in tests in the last 12 months.
Gill said, “I am very comfortable with the captaincy role, and I think the way we have been, you know, progressing in the past one year… it has been very pleasing to see from my perspective. And I think we are taking all the right steps in the right direction.”
Though Gill has admitted India’s inconsistency in the ongoing WTC cycle. He also pointed out the importance of winning the upcoming series to stay in the race for the WTC final.
India have nine more test matches to go in the ongoing cycle. The upcoming game will be the 600th test for India, and Gill will join an elite list of Indian captains, featuring Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (100th) and Virat Kohli (500th).
