Shubman Gill was dropped from the Melbourne test during BGT 2024-25.
Shubman Gill is considered as India’s batting future. The 25-year-old made a name for himself on the global stage by scoring three centuries in IPL 2023. He has continued his impressive form in limited-overs cricket and also has an ODI double century to his name.
Gill, however, has yet to attain consistency in test cricket. The Punjab batter has played 32 tests, scoring 1,893 runs at an average of 35, which doesn’t reflect his immense potential. While he has shown flashes of brilliance regularly, he has not won matches on his own for India in tests.
Gill struggled to make an impact in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. After missing the first match due to a thumb injury, he returned for the second and third tests but was dropped for the Boxing Day test in Melbourne.
Recently, he was also excluded from the T20I squad for the home series against England. With the ODI series starting on February 6, there have been discussions about whether Indian players not selected for the shortest format will participate in the second half of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season.
Will Shubman Gill play Punjab’s next Ranji Trophy match?
Shubman Gill has confirmed his availability for Punjab’s next Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, starting January 23. Gill’s last Ranji Trophy appearance was in 2022 when he played in the quarter-final against Madhya Pradesh.
His return for the match against Karnataka will give a big boost to Punjab’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs. Currently, Punjab sits fifth in Group A with just one win from five matches.
Gill’s return will provide strength to the Punjab squad that will be without Abhishek Sharma and Arshdeep Singh, who have been selected for the T20I series against England. The Indian management will hope Gill finds form ahead of the ODIs against England and the following ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
