Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as Indian Cricket Team’s ODI captain.

Indian Cricket Team‘s newest ODI captain Shubman Gill has shared his first reaction on being appointed for the role in 50-over cricket. Gill said that his ultimate goal is to win ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 and it’s a big honour for him to lead the side in this format.

The Indian Cricket Team witnessed a massive captaincy change as Shubman Gill, who is the test captain, replaced Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. This came after the Indian squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series was announced on Saturday (4th October).

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, while talking about the decision, said that it was taken keeping in mind the interest of Indian cricket. He also stressed that it was difficult for them to keep three different captains in three different formats.

Rohit Sharma’s removal as captain came as a massive shock as the senior batter is one of the best captains to have led the sides in ODIs. In his last assignment as a captain, he took his team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, winning the tournament without losing a single game.

Rohit Sharma, who expressed his desire to win ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, will now be playing as a batter under Shubman Gill. This also marks the new era in Indian cricket as the youngster would be keen to carry forward the legacy left by Rohit.

“It’s the biggest honour to be able to lead your country in the ODIs. To be able to lead a side that has done so well it’s immense pride for me. I hope I’ll be able to do great,”

“We have about 20 ODIs before we play the World Cup in South Africa, which is obviously the ultimate goal. Everything that we play and all the players that we play, they are going to try their best to have a great season before we get to the World Cup. Hopefully, we will be ready before we go to South Africa and win the title.”
