The Shubman Gill-led side lost to Australia by seven wickets in the 1st ODI at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Australian Cricket Team demolished Indian Cricket Team by seven wickets in the first ODI on Sunday, October 19 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. After the defeat in his first game as ODI captain, Shubman Gill said he learnt a lot of things.
Gill was appointed as the new ODI captain ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025, replacing Rohit Sharma. However, he faced a similar fate as he had in his maiden game as test captain. Gill had lost his first test against England earlier this year, and now faced a defeat against Australia in his first stint as ODI skipper.
Moreover, the right-handed batsman also failed with the bat, getting out for just 10 runs in the encounter. Rohit Sharma (8) and Virat Kohli (0) flopped as well, losing their wickets cheaply post their comeback to the national team. All three of them lost their wickets within nine overs in the encounter, which was reduced to 26 overs per side due to rain.
A lot of learnings for us from this game: Shubman Gill after defeat in 1st ODI vs Australia

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Indian captain said that losing three wickets in the powerplay was a big blow to the side. The 26-year-old added that they learned a lot of things from the match.
“Yes, I mean, when you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you’re always trying to play a catch-up game (on the rain delays and the poor start). A lot of learnings for us from this game and a lot of positives for us as well,” Gill said.
“We were defending 130 and we took the game, not till the very end, but pretty deep. We were very satisfied with that. We are very fortunate (on the crowd support). The fans turned up in huge numbers and hopefully they’ll be able to cheer us on at Adelaide as well,” he added.
Speaking about the match, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and opted to bowl first. After losing the top four batters cheaply, India lost the plot at the start itself, reaching 45/4 at one stage. KL Rahul (38) and Axar Patel (31) rescued India from a humiliating batting collapse, taking the scoreboard to 136/9 till the end.
However, the 131-run revised DLS target was like a cakewalk for the hosts as they won the game by seven wickets. Captain Marsh scored an unbeaten 46 runs to take the team home in the 22nd over. Australia have gained a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the next clash scheduled to be played on October 22 at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.
