Shubman Gill was announced as the skipper of the Indian Test team ahead of the India tour of England 2025.

The Indian Test skipper, Shubman Gill, will take the field against Afghanistan in the one-off Test match starting 6th June. The match will be played at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.

Gill had an illustrious IPL 2026, where he led the Gujarat Titans to the final. With the bat, he scored 732 runs in this edition, being the second-highest run scorer of the tournament.

Shubman was announced as the captain of the Indian Test and ODI teams in 2025. He is the highest run-getter in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, amassing 950 runs in 14 matches, with an average nearing 80.

India are set to play the remaining 10 matches of this WTC cycle in the coming months, including away tours to New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on home soil.

On that note, let’s take a look at the performance of the Indian skipper in the last five home Test matches that he has played.

5. New Zealand tour of India 2024, 2nd Test match

Gill did not feature in the series opener against New Zealand (NZ) due to neck stiffness. However, when he returned for the second match, it was not a pleasant outing either.

Batting first, the Kiwis scored 259 in the first innings, but India were all out for 156 runs, with Shubman scoring 30 off 72 deliveries before getting out to Santner.

Later, when India were put to chase 359 in the second innings, Shubman managed to contribute only 23 off his bat, eventually getting out to the same bowler.

India had already lost the series, but the third match was for pride. India had not suffered a clean sweep in a home Test series for 12 years, and they were aiming to continue that.

Coming to bat in the first innings, Shubman was the best batsman of the side, amassing 90 runs, helping India past the lead set by New Zealand.

However, when he came to bat in the second innings, where India were put to chase down 147, he got out cheaply for a single run. Ajaz Patel dismissed him in both innings. However, his second dismissal drew even more criticism as he was dismissed without attempting a shot and completely misjudged the ball.

3. West Indies tour of India 2025, 1st Test match

India won this match by an innings and 140 runs against the Windies in Ahmedabad. This was the first home series where Shubman Gill was captaining the side.

India got the visitors for 162 in the first innings. When India came out to bat, India posted 448 runs on the board with the help of three centuries, a half-century from Shubman and contributions from Jaiswal.

Gill scored 50 runs off 100 balls and was out while trying to play a reverse sweep. Nevertheless, India won that match by a significant margin, and it was Gill’s first win on home soil as a Captain.

2. West Indies tour of India 2025, 2nd Test match

After a steady half-century in the first match, Shubman Gill scored a scintillating century in the second one. India batted first and put a massive 518 on the board with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 175, Sudharsan’s 87, Gill’s 129* and significant contributions from Nitish Reddy & Dhruv Jurel.

The Indian skipper took on the spinners well and remained not out till the end. His innings consisted of 16 boundaries and two sixes. The ease with which Gill batted was commendable.

In the second innings, India had to chase down 121, which they did comfortably, winning the match by 7 wickets. With this win, Shubman Gill won his first Test series at home as a captain.

1. South Africa tour of India 2025, 1st Test match

In Kolkata, India faced the visitors South Africa (SA), in the series opener. Batting first, the Proteas scored 159, where Shubman Gill’s captaincy was on display. He rotated his bowlers well and capitalised on the pressure created by picking wickets at regular intervals. Bumrah shone with a 5-wicket haul.

However, they too were all out for just 189 runs in India’s first innings. After a decent start, when Shubman came to bat, he got injured after playing just 3 deliveries. He caught a neck spasm after hitting a glorious boundary.

His injury was so serious that he missed the remainder of the match and was also ruled out of the second Test.

That was Gill’s latest outing in whites. He will be playing a Test match after a prolonged white-ball season. India are currently positioned sixth on the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 points table. To qualify for the Final, they need to win seven out of the nine remaining fixtures.
