Shubman Gill was appointed as India’s T20I vice-captain ahead of T20 Asia Cup 2025.

Indian test and ODI captain Shubman Gill made a comeback to the T20I setup after a year when he was named in the squad for Asia Cup 2025 earlier this year. Along with being named in the squad, he was also appointed as vice-captain of the side.

With him being appointed as vice-captain, it was clear that he would straightaway make it to the playing XI and he replaced Sanju Samson as opener, pairing up with Abhishek Sharma at the top order. The move was heavily slammed by many cricket fans and former Indian cricketers as Samson had hammered three tons as an opener last year.

The Abhishek-Gill pair executed an impressive job in Asia Cup 2025, helping the team with their explosive starts. India remained unbeaten in the tournament across seven games and won the title by crushing Pakistan in the final.

Unlike the other two formats, Gill has struggled to make a mark in T20Is in 2025, failing to smash a fifty this year. In the ongoing series against South Africa, he got out for four runs and a golden duck in the first two games, followed by a decent 28-run knock in the third T20I.

Due to his ongoing struggles, some cricket experts have questioned his place in the T20I side by backing Samson as the better choice for opener. The latter was moved down the order after Gill’s return, and eventually lost his place in the playing XI against the Proteas, with the team preferring Jitesh Sharma over him as a wicket-keeper batter.
