Shubman Gill is already the Indian test captain.

In what has been the latest development, as per the reports in the Indian Express, it is learned that Shubman Gill is all set to take over the ODI captaincy of the Indian Cricket Team from Rohit Sharma. The young batter will take charge of the upcoming three-match series against the Australian Cricket Team.

The reports claimed that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be part of the squad for the ODI series. But, the selectors are looking at the bigger picture in terms of the leadership. They reportedly contacted Gill and informed him about their plans, just a day ahead of the squad announcement.

It is learned that selectors want Shubman Gill to captain the side for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027 to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Not only this, the young batter also attended the selection meeting, in which Rohit Sharma wasn’t part of.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir was also kept in the loop as the baton in the Indian cricket is all set to be passed from Rohit Sharma, 38, to Shubman Gill. The youngster impressed many with his heroics in the test series against England, which was his first assignment as the captain in the longest format of the game.

Rohit Sharma being removed as the ODI captain comes as a massive surprise as the senior batter recently led India to ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title. Under his leadership, India won the tournament undefeated and it was almost certain that he would be leading the side in ODIs for a long time.

However, keeping in mind the bigger picture, the decision was made and with Gill being the new poster boy of India, it was almost certain that he would take the role at some point. In his first assignment as captain in tests, he slammed 754 runs and also helped his team draw the series by a margin of 2-2.

The official confirmation is all set to be made soon as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be announcing the squad soon for the Australia tour. The two teams will lock horns with each other in the three ODIs and five T20Is.
