Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury in the first IND vs SA test in Kolkata.

As per the reports in ESPNCricinfo, it is learned that Indian Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from the hospital in Kolkata, where he was being treated for the neck injury he sustained in the first test against South Africa Cricket Team at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. However, he is highly likely to miss the second test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, which is scheduled to begin on November 22.

On day 2 of the first test, Gill sustained a neck injury after he hit a boundary off Simon Harmer’s delivery in the first innings. The right-handed batsman could only play three deliveries in the clash before getting retired hurt. After the incident, he was seen in immense pain and left the field with the team physio and did not come out to bat again.

He was then sent to a hospital in Kolkata for further scans and treatment and spent a night there. On day three of the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Gill has been ruled out of the game and will not bat in the second innings. They also added that he is under observation of the medical team.

The reports in ESPNCricinfo also claimed that after the defeat in the first test, India will have a training session in Kolkata on Tuesday and despite getting discharged from the hospital, the Indian test captain will miss the session. Moreover, the team will fly to Guwahati on Wednesday but Gill is unlikely to take that flight as travelling is not recommended for people suffering from neck issues. As a result, Gill is highly likely to miss the second test against South Africa.

Gill’s ouster from the first test came as a big blow for India as they failed to chase a 124-run target, getting bowled out for 93 runs. The Temba Bavuma-led side clinched a victory by 30 runs to start the campaign on a winning note.

After the match, India head coach Gautam Gambhir also acknowledged that Gill getting ruled out was a big blow to India’s batting. Speaking about his availability in the next game, Gambhir said that the management will take a call after the team physio’s verdict on Gill’s condition.

“It was tough because we always knew we were one down. Obviously, Shubman wasn’t there, and then losing two before lunch, we were literally three down. But we always felt that if we got those partnerships, a 50-run partnership or two 40-run partnerships, we would’ve been in the game. He (Gill) is still being assessed. So, let’s see. The physios will take a call today evening and we will take a call,” Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.

Meanwhile, if the 26-year-old misses the next game in Guwahati, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will captain the side. The wicket-keeper batter was also the stand-in captain in the first test. Moreover, Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal are two possible batters that India can consider in the XI if Gill misses the next clash.
