"You've been an inspiration.." Shubman Gill pays tribute to Rohit Sharma following his retirement from test cricket

Rohit Sharma announced his test retirement on May 7, 2025.
Indian batting legend Rohit Sharma announced his surprising retirement from test cricket on Wednesday, May 7. Sharma shared a story on his Instagram account to reveal his decision. Post his retirement, many former and active cricketers congratulated him for a marvellous test career. Indian opener Shubman Gill has also shared a heart-warming post on Instagram for Sharma.
Sharma played 67 tests for India from 2013 to 2024. He also took over as captain of the side from February 2022 and led the team to ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final. India lost the final to Australia and ended as runners-up. Sharma could not lead the team to WTC 2023-25 final; which will take place in June this year between Australia and South Africa.
Gill and Sharma played many games as openers for Indian Cricket Team in tests. Notably, both opened for India in the infamous Gabba test win against Australia in 2021.

Following Rohit’s retirement from the longest format of the game, Gill shared a heart-warming Instagram story to pay tribute to Sharma. He shared a photo of himself with Sharma and termed him the best test captain.
“India is grateful for what you’ve done in tests as a player and a captain. You’ve been an absolute inspiration to me and everyone that has played with or against you. There are things I’ve learnt from you that I’m going to remember forever. Happy retirement to @rohitsharma45 one of the best captains that I’ve played under. Thank you Cap!,” he wrote along with the photo.

Meanwhile, Sharma will continue to represent Team India in ODIs. He is also the ODI skipper. Last year, the right-handed batter retired from the T20Is after winning the ICC T20I World Cup 2024 in June.
Sharma is currently busy with the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He is part of Mumbai Indians (MI) and plays as an opener. Gill is the skipper of Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2025. Both teams have showcased a dominant form in the tournament and are among the favourites to make it to the playoffs.
