Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal: Stats comparison in T20I cricket

Shubman Gill was picked over Yashasvi Jaiswal in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, 19th August. And shockingly, Yashasvi Jaiswal was omitted from the chosen list, while Shubman Gill was picked in the squad and named vice-captain of the team. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Indian team in the continental tournament that will be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28.
The India squad saw Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson being chosen as the first-choice openers, and it was a race between Gill and Jaiswal for the backup opener spot. Jaiswal was India’s backup opener when they won the T20 World Cup in 2024, while Gill was in reserves.
But with Gill becoming the Indian test captain, the BCCI selectors feel that the time is coming for him to take over as the captain of the team in all three formats. Hence, he has been chosen and named vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel in the role.
