Shubman Gill is gearing up to captain India in the ODI series against New Zealand.
Indian Cricket Team captain Shubman Gill has given a key advice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the betterment of test team. According to a report by TOI, Gill suggested the board to conduct 15-day camp for Indian players ahead of every test series.
Notably, Indian players had very little time to prepare for the home test series against West Indies and South Africa last year. The two-match test series against West Indies started on October 2 and many players arrived in India just four days ahead of the campaign after playing Asia Cup 2025 in UAE.
Similarly, Gill and many other test players reached the country from Australia just four days ahead of the test series against South Africa in November. The Proteas captured a 2-0 whitewash against India, thoroughly dominating the hosts at their home in both games.

After the loss, BCCI conducted informal meetings with selectors and the leadership group as the team faced two whitewashes in a span of 13 months. In the meeting, Gill suggested the governing body to conduct 15-day camps for players ahead of every test series, which will allot players enough preparation time.
“Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before going into a Test series. There was an issue with the itinerary this season where the team didn’t have much time to prepare. Gill recommended to the Board that it would be ideal if there were 15-day red-ball camps before a Test series,” a BCCI source told TOI.
“Gill is showing assertive qualities now. He is presenting his vision to the selectors and BCCI with a lot more clarity. It augurs well for Indian cricket as there is a need for a strong captain after Rohit Sharma. The Test and ODI teams are Gill’s. It is important for him to have a bigger say,” he added.
Last year, New Zealand crushed India 3-0 in a home test series, which came as a big blow for the latter. It also hampered India’s chances of making it to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final.
Notably, South Africa registered a test series victory in India after 25 years, having last won in 2000. Moreover, they also handed India their worst-ever defeat by the margin of runs in the second test in Guhawati, where the hosts lost by 408 runs. Due to a neck injury, Gill was ruled out of both games and Rishabh Pant captained the team in his absence.
Meanwhile, Gill is gearing up to captain India in the ODI series against New Zealand, which will commence on January 11 with the opening game in Vadodara.
