Shukri Conrad previously was the head coach of South Africa’s test side.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday, May 9 appointed Shukri Conrad as head coach of the senior men’s team in white-ball formats. Previously, Conrad was head coach of South Africa test side and now he will become all-format coach of the side.

Conrad takes charge from former white-ball coach Rob Walter, who resigned from the post in April 2025 due to personal reasons. Conrad will take charge of the South Africa team in ODIs and T20Is till the end of ICC ODI World Cup 2027, which South Africa will host. Now, he will work with a selection convener for team selections.

The selection convener is yet to be appointed. The CSA invited applications for the selection convener post last month. April 29 was the last date for the submission of the applications and CSA will announce the new appointment soon.

Shukri Conrad succeeded Mark Boucher as test coach after September 2022

Conrad is a former First-Class (DC) cricket player from South Africa. He played nine FC cricket matches in South Africa’s domestic circuit from 1885 to 1991. He took over the role of test coach after Mark Boucher left the post in September 2022. Boucher was the coach of the side in all three formats.

Interestingly, Conrad applied for the role of both red-ball and white-ball formats at that time. However, CSA went forward with split-coaching approach and named different coaches for tests and white-ball cricket. After taking over as the head coach of the South Africa Cricket Team across three formats, Conrad said he was honoured to take up the responsibility and excited for the journey ahead.

“I’m truly honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading the national team across all three formats. Coaching the Test side has been the greatest privilege of my cricket journey, and to now oversee the white-ball teams as well is something unbelievably special. I’m genuinely excited about the prospects that lie ahead,” the 58-year-old said in an official statement.

Notably, it was Conrad who proposed to appoint Temba Bavuma as captain of South Africa’s test team. Bavuma is the current skipper of both tests and ODIs, while Aiden Markram has the reins of the T20I team. South Africa are scheduled to tour Zimbabwe in June 2025 for a two-match test series. Their last international assignment was the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they reached the semi-finals.
