The result not only gave Shubman Gill & Co. a 1-0 lead in the two-match series but also provided a massive boost to their PCT, improving their prospects in the current WTC cycle.

Devdutt Padikkal announced himself in Test cricket

Considered one of the most challenging formats of the game, Devdutt Padikkal stole the spotlight with an outstanding performance at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. The left-handed Indian batter produced a magnificent 167 in India’s first innings.
He followed his majestic knock with a 44 in the second innings and was eventually named the Player of the Match. Padikkal set the tone for India’s innings, converting the opportunity into a landmark.
Rishabh Pant continues to dominate Test cricket
Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is often regarded as one of the most unconventional yet one of the most successful players in the history of Test cricket. Pant once again demonstrated his attacking approach and helped India to post a massive target in their second innings.
During a 66-run knock, he redefined Test cricket, becoming the first Indian batter to reach a milestone of 100 sixes. Pant rescued India and provided them with the momentum to hand India their biggest advantage.
Manav Suthar emerges as a match-winner

While Devdutt Padikkal dominated with the bat, Manav Suthar, the Indian left-arm orthodox spinner, stole the show with the ball in just his second outing for India. Having made his debut earlier this year against Afghanistan, Suthar did well in the first Test against Sri Lanka.
Suthar took four wickets in the first innings and then emerged as a genuine match-winner on Day 5, finishing with a six-wicket haul. Having dismantled Sri Lanka’s resistance, Suthar picked his maiden 10-wicket haul in his first-ever WTC game.
India’s batting attack showed great versatility
While India have been struggling in this phase of transition, the Indian batters showed great resistance as a team against Sri Lanka in Galle. India’s dominance on the challenging track at Galle was established not merely on a single brilliant performance, but on an excellent collective display.
While Padikkal dominated the first innings, KL Rahul played a fine hand in a massive partnership that set the tone for India’s first innings total. Some audacious performances from Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant also helped India pile a big score, portraying the versatility of the Indian batting order.
India’s crucial leap in the WTC points table
India are still in contention for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2027 despite a sluggish start to their campaign with a handful of defeats against England and South Africa.
This massive 165-run victory has added crucial points to India’s tally, boosting their percentage of points (PCT) and bringing them into contention for the final.
With a PCT of 53.33 and eight more matches left for India, the Shubman Gill-led side now stands a high chance of finishing in the top two spots in the WTC 2025-27 points table.
