SL vs IND 2nd Test Weather Forecast: Rain forces early tea in Colombo on Day 2

India were sent for an early tea on Day 2 as rain interrupted play in Colombo.

India remained in a strong position in the 2nd and final Test of India’s tour of Sri Lanka (SL vs IND). However, it seems the rain is not in India’s favour, as play was interrupted in Colombo on Day 2 due to it.

The weather at the Sinhalese Sports Club emerged as a major area of concern for the Indian side, who are aiming for a clean sweep against the Lankans. After India finished the opening day of the second Test at 300/5, the visitors resumed their innings, and Dhruv Jurel alongside Rishabh Pant extended India’s first-innings total well past the 400-run mark.

Jurel looked in excellent touch and was nearing his first away hundred for India in Test cricket when rain played the spoiler in Colombo. 

Rain had been a concern even before the start of the Test in Colombo, as earlier forecasts had indicated the possibility of light to heavier showers during the five-day contest at the Sri Lankan capital. The concerns materialised on Day 2 as overcast conditions and frequent showers affected the proceedings. 

Colombo weather forces early tea on Day 2

The weather eventually interrupted India’s progress during the second session. Rain started at the Sinhalese Sports Club, forcing the umpires to call an early tea break and requiring Indian batsmen Dhruv Jurel and Mohammed Siraj to leave the field.

At tea, India reached 475/8, with Dhruv Jurel unbeaten on 95 and Siraj yet to open his account after having faced 17 deliveries. The interruption was particularly frustrating for India because Jurel was closing in on a well-deserved century in Colombo and the visitors were racing to the 500-run mark in the first innings. 

On Monday, the temperature will hover around a pleasant 30–31 degrees, but as the day progresses, the likelihood of rain in this island nation will increase. Hence, the day’s play is likely to be largely affected by overcast conditions and a wet outfield. 

Weather report for SL vs IND 2nd Test 

With the first two days of the second Test nearly over, Indian fans would be eager to know the weather forecast for the remaining days. India are aiming for a clean sweep to fancy their chances of qualifying for the WTC final by finishing at the top of the WTC points table. 

However, the forecast suggests that rain could remain a recurring threat throughout the remainder of the Colombo Test. Day 3 on Tuesday, 25th of August, is expected to bring cloudy conditions with mild showers during the morning and afternoon sessions.

There is an approximately 67% chance of rain in the morning, and it will drop to 56% in the afternoon. The likelihood of heavy downpour will increase on the 4th day, as the probability of rain will remain at 49% throughout the day.

Therefore, India should aim to score as many runs as possible in the first innings to put pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen in overcast conditions.

The final day, however, promises better conditions than Day 4. The Test match is scheduled to run until August 27, so adverse weather could impact the number of overs bowled. A draw in the game due to bad weather might cause a massive blow to India’s WTC campaign.
