The 1st SL vs IND Test will start at 10 AM IST on Saturday at Galle International Stadium.
The much-awaited Test series between Sri Lanka and India is scheduled to start on Saturday (August 15). The first game will kick off at 10 AM IST at Galle International Stadium. This is the first Test series between the two teams in Sri Lanka since 2017.
The Men in Blue have been undefeated in the last six Test series against Sri Lanka, winning five and drawing one in 2010. Shubman Gill and Co. are coming off a Test series defeat against South Africa at home and have been inconsistent in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
That is why it is an important series for the team, especially for head coach Gautam Gambhir. Under his coaching, India have played 19 tests and lost 10. There are seven wins and two draws also.
India lost the BGT 2025-26 and two home series against New Zealand and South Africa, respectively. Thus, the SL vs IND tour is very important for the head coach and the team. To win the first test, India need a strong bowling combination in Galle.
What bowling combination should India choose for the Galle Test?
Traditionally, the wicket at Galle International Stadium is spin-friendly, starting to do a bit from the beginning. However, as reported by the Times of India, the wicket has some grass, and it is not dry.
It will keep the wicket firm, and the batting conditions for the first two days will be excellent. However, after the first two days, the pitch will start to deteriorate, making it favourable for slow bowlers.
The report also suggests that India are likely to field a combination of 2 pacers and 3 spinners. Ravindra Jadeja is the first-choice spinner, while Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack. Sri Lanka have some really good spinners, and we might see a spin-dominant game in Galle.
That is where it will be important for India to pick their bowling combination according to the pitch. Prasidh Krishna has been the bowler that India have trusted in the recent past. So, in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the two pacers can be Siraj and Krishna.
Krishna is a hit-the-deck bowler and can be skiddy at this venue. Apart from Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav is likely to get a nod ahead as the second spinner in the game. He will get great assistance from this wicket and can be a game-changer here.
Manav Suthar should be the third spinner, who won the MOTM award in his Test debut against Afghanistan. He is the tallest spinner in the Indian camp for this series and can get good bounce.
Moreover, he can also bat, which will strengthen India’s batting lineup. So, India should go with Jadeja, Kuldeep, and Suthar as their spinners and Siraj and Krishna as two pacers.
India’s likely bowling combination for 1st Test:
Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
