Sourav Ganguly appointed as head coach of Pretoria Capitals ahead of SA20 2026

Sourav Ganguly will replace Jonathan Trott as head coach of Pretoria Capitals.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the head coach of SA20 team Pretoria Capitals. He has replaced Jonathan Trott in the role, who recently stepped down. Notably, this will be Ganguly’s first stint as a head coach of a professional cricket team.

Notably, Pretoria Capitals produced a dismal performance in last season of the SA20. Led by Rilee Rossouw, they won just two games and lost six encounters out of 10 clashes, while two games ended without result. With 14 points, they ended at fifth spot in the points table.

They also finished at fifth spot in the prior season in 2024 and failed to qualify for the playoffs. In the opening season in 2023, the Capitals finished as runners-up after losing the final to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Notably, Ganguly has held the post of Director of Cricket for JSW Sports – the parent company of Pretoria Capitals – since last year. The group also owns the Delhi Capitals (DC) team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Delhi Capitals Women Team in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Ganguly will enter into a coaching role for the first time. From 2015 to 2019, he served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Later, he became the mentor of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2019. From 2019 to 2022, he was in an administrative role as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Meanwhile, Ganguly’s first focus will be the upcoming player auction for SA20 2025-26 on September 9. Pretoria Capitals will look to strengthen their squad during the auction.

Meanwhile, SA20 2025-26 will be played from December 26, 2025, to January 25, 2026. The tournament usually takes place in January-February; however, the next season will start early due to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in February.
