South Africa have entered their maiden men’s ICC T20 World Cup final.

The South African pacers stormed their team into their maiden final of a men’s World Cup, ODI or T20I, after their thumping nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the first semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The spirited Afghanistan team had defeated the likes of Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh to reach their first-ever semi-final of a major ICC tournament. However, the Protea quicks were too good for them in the semi-final at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, where there was early assistance for the quicks.

Afghanistan were bowled out for their lowest-ever total in T20Is, 56, in 11.5 overs; it is also the lowest total by any team in a knockout match at the men’s T20 World Cup. Such was the state of Afghanistan’s batting show that the top contributor in their innings was extras – 13. Among the batters, Azmatullah Omarzai’s 10 runs were the most.

Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to bat. Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada were all over the Afgan batters right from the first over of the match. The duo picked the top five Afghanistan wickets in the first five overs of the innings, including the tournament’s top-scorer Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck.

Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi joined in the fun to pick up the rest of the five wickets and bowl out Afghanistan for only 56.

In the chase, although South Africa lost Quinton de Kock in the first over to Fazalhaq Farooqi, Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram saw off the chase comfortably in 8.5 overs.

The Proteas have been unbeaten so far in this tournament, winning all their eight matches. A victory in the final will give them their first-ever ICC T20 World Cup trophy.

Netizens lavished praise on South Africa’s bowlers for their dominating performance in the semi-final against Afghanistan:
