South Africa have defeated the USA and England in the Super 8 round so far.

The Aiden Markram-led South Africa have won all their matches so far in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 tournament, though they have not yet had a properly convincing victory with all departments firing.

The margins of victory of their two games in the Super 8 round have been small. Thus, despite two wins in two games in this round, the Proteas are still under the threat of being knocked out of the semi-final race.

The Proteas topped Group D by winning all their four games in the group stage, but they also stood in positions where they could have lost against the Netherlands, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Then, they kicked off their Super 8 campaign with an 18-run victory over the USA. USA needed 28 runs in the last two overs but could manage only nine. In their second match of this round, South Africa went behind in the game when England required 25 runs in 18 deliveries. However, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje saved the day once again for the Proteas. SA won by only seven runs.

These two wins by small margins meant that South Africa’s net run rate is +0.625, and despite being undefeated in the tournament so far, a loss in their last fixture could potentially lead to their ouster. Looking back, the Markram-led side might lament not winning by a bigger margin against the USA.

England, who have two points in two games, have an NRR of +0.412 and a game against the USA in hand. West Indies, who also have one win in two matches, have a healthy NRR of +1.814, and they will meet SA next.

Can South Africa still be knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024?

Yes, if South Africa lose their last match to West Indies and England defeat USA by a margin that takes their NRR over South Africa’s, then the Proteas will be knocked out. For example, England need to win by only 10 runs or an over to spare, if the team batting first scores 160, for their NRR to go beyond South Africa’s. Then, the SA vs WI match will be a must-win encounter for the Proteas, a virtual knockout for both sides.

Since England are expected to defeat USA with a decent margin, Markram’s team stand in a position where they have to defeat hosts West Indies in their last Super 8 game.
