Who is Spencer Johnson? All you need to know about Australia pacer bought by GT for 10 crores in IPL 2024 auction

Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson entered the IPL 2024 auction with a base price of 50 lakhs.

Australian pacer Spencer Johnson has joined Gujarat Titans camp for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Gujarat Titans spent a huge amount on the young Australian pacer who is taking his early strides in international cricket. Johnson’s base price was at 50 lakh INR but a bidding war between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals was enough to make him earn big from IPL mini-auction 2024 held in Dubai. 

Gujarat Titans initially got the challenge from Kolkata Knight Riders but they stopped at 85 lakhs. After this Delhi Capitals entered the war with Gujarat Titans and it went on till the final amount reached 10 crores INR. Titans’ bid was the winner, Spencer Johnson has been doing a magnificent job for Brisbane Heat in Big Bash League and he also had a terrific time in The Hundred tournament played in England. 

Who is Spencer Johnson?

The 28-year-old Australian left-hand pacer was favourites among several franchises in IPL mini-auction 2024. Spencer Johnson has recently made his international debut for Australia and played 2 T20I games and an ODI match for his national side. Johnson made T20I debut against South Africa at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. He went on to pick up 2 wickets in 2 games and picked up 2 wickets on his debut. 

One month later, Spencer Johnson made his ODI debut against India at Holkar Stadium in Indore and bowled a costly spell. Johnson conceded 61 runs in 8 overs in the game. Australia are considering Johnson as the next big thing in their setup. So far he has been a regular feature in the T20 format and played only 4 first-class games in the domestic cricket setup. He has been an impressive player in red-ball cricket as well. 

He has so far taken 20 wickets in 4 games for South Australia in Sheffield Shield and 6 wickets while playing in List-A games for his state side. Including BBL and a few other leagues, Spencer Johnson has picked up 17 wickets in 20 games he has played in T20 cricket. Gujarat Titans will be entering into IPL 2024 under a new leader. Shubman Gill was appointed as the skipper of the side replacing Hardik Pandya who was traded to Mumbai Indians.
