Sri Lanka break India's 48-year-old test cricket record as Indian cricketers get busy with IPL 2024

Sri Lanka achieved the record in the ongoing second test against Bangladesh in Chattogram.
As the ongoing IPL 2024 has been hogging all the limelight with excellent bowling and batting displays, the Sri Lanka cricket team has created a world record, going past India’s record during the ongoing second test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and chose to bat first in Chattogram. And his batters didn’t let him down. The top three batters all scored half-centuries. Nishan Madushka made 57, Dimuth Karunaratne made 86 and Kusal Mendis narrowly missed out on a test ton, scoring 93 runs.
Dinesh Chandimal continued the batting assault, scoring 59 runs, while skipper De Silva made 70, and the hero of the last match, Kamindu Mendis remained unbeaten on 92.
These brilliant batting performances led Sri Lanka to make 531 in their first innings. The returning Shakib Al Hasan picked three wickets, while Hasan Mahmud took two scalps.
Sri Lanka registers the highest team total in Tests without a century; breaking India’s 48-year-old record
Despite the enormous team total, no Sri Lankan players scored a century in this innings. However, their combined efforts resulted in Sri Lanka reaching a historic milestone, breaking the Indian cricket team’s 48-year record.
Sri Lanka’s impressive total of 531 runs against Bangladesh now stands as the highest team total in test history without any batsman scoring a century.
This record was previously held by India. In 1976, India declared 524/9 in the first innings of a test match against New Zealand at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium. Surprisingly, none of the Indian hitters reached triple figure mark in that innings, making it the then highest team total in test cricket without a single batsman getting a century.
In that match, Sunil Gavaskar (66), Mohinder Amarnath (70), Gundappa Viswanath (68), Ashok Mankad (50), Syed Kirmani (64), and Bishan Singh Bedi (50) scored half-centuries for India.
After 48 years, Sri Lanka have now surpassed India’s longstanding record.
Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh in the first test in Sylhet by 328 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match SL vs BAN Test series.
