Ravi Shastri has made a massive contribution to Indian Cricket both as a batter as well as coach.
India’s Ravi Shastri is an important figure in Indian cricket. His contributions go beyond his achievements on the field of cricket, having fast become one of the best and most energetic broadcasters the sport has ever seen.
Shastri was part of India’s historic 1983 World Cup win, where he produced a special century against the mighty West Indies. He has also hit six sixes in an over back in 1985, and performed as India’s head coach alongside Virat Kohli, with the pair together massively credited for India’s rise in Test match cricket.
The city of Mumbai has given birth to India’s biggest legends including the ‘God of Cricket’, Sachin Tendulkar who played most of his early days at the Wankhede Stadium.
The cricket stadium has fittingly given tributes to the Indian greats, by naming stands after them. The Sachin Tendulkar stand is one of the biggest, occupying thousands of people at the third level. Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Merchant too have stands named after them, for their incredible contributions to the sport.
Most recently, T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy winning skipper Rohit Sharma was given a memorable tribute by the Mumbai Cricket Association, by renaming the Level 3 Divecha Pavilion stand after the name of the former Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

If Indian cricket were to have a home ground, then it would be the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Placed near the artistic Marine Drive, the stadium has played host to several historic cricketing moments, with India’s 2011 final win against Sri Lanka topping the table.
Now in 2026, Mumbai legend Ravi Shastri is all set to be honoured, with a stand to be soon named after him. MCA President Ajinkya Naik has confirmed the renaming of one of the stands at Wankhede after Shastri, who continues to be relevant due to his incredible commentary and ability to make big-match situations even more special with his energy and words.
Some other changes include Gate Number 3, to be named after late Dilip Sardesai, who played tests for India and was the first ever Goa-born to play for India.
Gate No. 5 is set to be named after former Indian women’s captain Diana Edulji. Late Eknath Solkar, who remains test cricket’s most successful fielder, is also expected to be rewarded.
