Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket on March 5.
On March 5, 2025, veteran Australian batsman Steve Smith brought an end to his remarkable ODI career, which spanned 15 years.
His decision came after Australia’s semi-final exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 following a four-wicket loss to India. Smith was given the captaincy for the tournament after several senior players, including regular skipper Pat Cummins, were ruled out.
Leading a young side, Smith guided Australia to their first Champions Trophy semi-final since 2009. The Aussies defeated England, while their matches against South Africa and Afghanistan were washed out due to rain before they faced India in the semi-finals.
Smith made his ODI debut against the West Indies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2010. Initially joining the side as a bowling all-rounder, he went on to establish himself as the country’s most important batsman in the following years.
His most impressive innings in the format came in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). He scored 105 off 93 balls to help his team post a massive total of 328 runs. Australia ultimately won the match by 95 runs.
Retired from ODI cricket, Smith will still be available for selection in test and T20I formats for his country. He will aim to add another ICC trophy to his cabinet by winning the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final 2023-25 against South Africa in June.
On that note, let’s take a look at his numbers in ODI cricket.
