Steve Smith has only announced his retirement from the 50-over format in international cricket.
Steve Smith’s future in Test cricket ahead of the 2027 Ashes has suddenly become a topic of discussion. The legendary Australian batsman has carved a distinct niche for himself in Test cricket over the past decade; he has set remarkable records and has been a vital part of the Australian Test team.
But now, at 37, Smith is playing his international career match by match. Although he hasn’t said anything about retiring from international cricket, his recent statement suggests that even he is not entirely sure when he will stop playing Test cricket.
With 125 Tests and 37 centuries already to his name, one thing is still missing from Smith’s career – winning an Ashes series in England. This is a very interesting phase of Smith’s career we are seeing right now.
Smith remains a highly experienced batsman for Australia; at the same time, he is trying his hand at T20 cricket and has expressed a desire to play for Australia at the 2028 Olympics.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Steve Smith admitted that he cannot guarantee his presence in England for the 2027 Ashes.
“I don’t even know if I’ll be there yet. I’m kind of a series-by-series proposition, as I’ve been for a while, and that’s still a fair way away for me right now. So, yeah, I’d love to win one there or to have won one there, but you wait and see if that comes to fruition,” said Smith.
This will give Smith another opportunity to win an Ashes series in England. However, Smith has a solid record in Ashes Tests for Australia.
Meanwhile, Smith has shared his eagerness to play in T20Is for Australia, with the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 marked as his future goal. Currently, Smith plays T20 cricket for the Amsterdam Flames. However, he has not played international T20 cricket for Australia over the past few years.
