Steve Smith has said that he wants to play for Australia at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. However, the right-handed batsman also is aware that it would be tricky for him a get a spot in Australian team for the Olympic Games.
Cricket will return to Olympics after 128 years in the next edition in 2028. The sport was last played at the Paris Olympics in 1900. A total of six men’s and women’s teams will be part of LA 2028 Olympics.
Cricket will be played in the T20 format during the tournament, which will be played in July 2028. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is yet to finalise the qualification process for the sporting event.

While speaking to Sky Sports, Smith said that he wants to play in LA 2028 Olympics and will try his best to be picked up in Australian team. However, he also noted that it would be a tricky affair for him.
“I mean, it is a goal of mine to try and make that Olympic team in 28. I think, you know, the team’s doing pretty well at the moment, the Australian T20 team. So it’s going to be tricky to get in there, but just have to keep putting my best foot forward, and we’ll never know,” he said.
“Yeah, I mean, I’ve watched a lot of Olympics since I was a young kid and really enjoyed watching the Australian athletes go about it. So, you know, when I heard that cricket was going to be a part of it, I was like, that would be really cool to be involved,” he added.
The former Australian skipper feels that playing in Olympics will be an opportunity to represent the country on the global stage.
“So, I’ve obviously played in, you know, lots of World Cups, Ashes and Border-Gavaskar Trophy and things like that, but yeah, when this popped up, it was something new and another opportunity to represent your country on a world stage. So, yeah, it was like I’d love to be involved in that, but it’s still a fair way away. So, we’ll see,” he said.
Notably, Smith will turn 39 years old during LA 2028 Olympics and it might be tough for him to prove his fitness for T20I cricket. Earlier this year, the 36-year-old announced his retirement from ODIs. However, he continues to be available for T20Is and tests.
