SL vs IND: Ex-India star DRAGS Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as he demands strict action on Yashasvi Jaiswal

Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a serious on-field spat with Asitha Fernando in second SL vs IND Test.

The debate over on-field aggression in Indian cricket has resurfaced, with several youngsters confronting each other in verbal spats, often leading to physical combat. The debate was instigated after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s confrontation with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando during the Sri Lanka vs India second Test in Colombo.

What initially appeared to be a heated exchange following an intense battle between bat and ball developed into a massive issue of responsibility and discipline, especially with debates surrounding the Indian batter. 

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has now entered the debate with a strong message for the authorities, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The former Indian batter believes that more severe actions should be taken against these young cricketers, as they should fear the consequences for crossing the line. His comments, through an X post, also involved a former incident involving India’s teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. 

Sanjay Manjrekar questions ICC’s leniency on the Yashasvi Jaiswal controversy

Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a heated exchange with the Lankan pacer, Asitha Fernando, after the bowler dismissed him for 45 following a three boundaries from the young Indian left-hander. Fernando’s agitated send-off provoked Jaiswal, who turned back to confront him, with the two players coming face-to-face. 

During this exchange, Fernando pointed his head towards Jaiswal, and he too leaned towards him; subsequently, Jaiswal’s helmet made contact with the Lankan cricketer. The ICC found both players guilty and charged them with 25% of their match fees, along with a demerit point, following a breach of Article 2.12. 

However, Manjrekar argued that the punishment did not go far enough. In a post directed at the ICC and the BCCI, he argued that repeatedly allowing players with such behaviour would encourage them to repeat it in the future. Instead, he claimed that strict action should be taken against such misconduct. 

The former Indian batter also brought up the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reference and linked it closely to what happened during the Colombo Test. Sooryavanshi was involved in a heated exchange during the tri-series match between India A and Sri Lanka A. After a defeat in the super over, Sooryavanshi was seen pushing Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage during a confrontation. 

During that incident, Sooryavanshi was fined 50% of his match fees, but Manjrekar claimed that had he been the India A coach or manager, then he would have left Sooryavanshi out of the next match to reinforce a message that physical confrontation is not acceptable on the field of cricket. 

Though Jaiswal claimed earlier that viewers should not judge his actions without knowing what was said to him, Manjrekar makes his point, by pointing out that players should be able to manage such situations more wisely, as rash behaviour can often influence their careers as much as their performance.
