Top 5 highest successful run-chases by Bangladesh in test cricket
The Bangladesh cricket team made their test debut in 2000.
The Bangladesh cricket team played their first test match in the year 2000. Since then, the Asian side have played 145 test matches and emerged victorious only on 21 occasions. The Tigers suffered defeat in 105 outings and have been involved in 18 drawn tests.
Bangladesh have produced a few quality batters and bowlers who have done well in test cricket. These cricketers have shined on different occasions, helping their country win some tests.
Though Bangladesh have struggled against the higher-ranked sides in the world, they have made some memorable chases in test cricket that have showed their potential and skill level under the pressure of batting in the fourth innings of a test match. Out of 21 wins, Bangladesh have won seven of them while chasing targets successfully in the fourth innings.

5. 101 runs vs Zimbabwe, Mirpur, 2014
Bangladesh’s fifth highest successful run-chase in test cricket came during the first test of the home series against Zimbabwe in 2014.
Batting first, Zimbabwe scored 240 runs, with Sikandar Raza top-scoring with 51. In reply, the hosts registered 254 runs in their first innings as three batters scored fifties. In Zimbabwe’s second innings, the visitors were bundled out for just 114 runs as spinner Taijul Islam scalped eight wickets.
While chasing 101 runs, the hosts were struggling at one point when they lost three wickets without opening their account. But, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim’s knocks of 28 and 23 runs were enough to get their side a victory by three wickets.
4. 138 runs vs Ireland, Mirpur, 2023
Ireland toured Bangladesh for a one-off test match in April 2023. The visitors were bundled out for 214 runs in their first innings.
In reply, Bangladesh wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim played an impressive knock of 126 runs, which helped the hosts score 369 runs. In Ireland’s second innings, Lorcan Tucker scored 108 runs, which helped the visitors set a target of 138 runs.
In the chase, Mushfiqur starred once again with an unbeaten knock of 51 runs, helping his side claim a win by seven wickets. This is their fourth-highest successful run-chase in test cricket history.
3. 185 runs vs Pakistan, Rawalpindi, 2024
Bangladesh toured Pakistan in 2024 for a two-match test series and whitewashed the hosts 2-0 to register their maiden test series win over Pakistan. During the second test match in Rawalpindi, the Tigers registered their third-highest successful run-chase in the longest format.
Batting first, Pakistan scored 274 after Saim Ayub and Salman Agha made half-centuries. In reply, Bangladesh were reeling at 26/6 at one point. However, Liton Das’ 138-run knock and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 78 helped them post 262.
Pakistan were then bundled out for 172 runs as Bangladesh speedster Hasan Mahmud bagged a five-wicket haul. While chasing a tricky 185 runs, opener Zakir Hasan played a quick fire knock of 40 (39) and five other batters chipped in with 20s and 30s as the visitors won by six wickets.
2. 191 runs vs Sri Lanka, Colombo, 2017
Bangladesh’s second highest successful run-chase in tests came against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2017.
Dinesh Chandimal scored 138, which helped the hosts score 338 runs in the first innings. In reply, Shakib Al Hasan slammed 116 runs and took his side to a huge total of 467 runs.
In Sri Lanka’s second innings, opener Dimuth Karunaratne played a terrific knock of 126 runs, that helped the hosts set a target of 191 runs for the visitors. In the chase, Tamim Iqbal played a match-winning knock of 82 runs as Bangladesh won the match by four wickets.
1. 217 runs vs West Indies, St George’s, 2009
The Bangladesh cricket team won their first ever test match against the West Indies in St. George’s in July 2009. They did it by registering their highest successful run-chase in test cricket.
West Indies’ Travis Dowlin played a vital knock of 95 runs, which guided the hosts to 237 runs in their first innings. In reply, Bangladesh were all out for 232 runs, where Rahim top scored with 48.
In the West Indies’ second innings, they were bowled out for 209 as Shakib Al Hasan bagged a five-wicket haul.
In the chase of 215, Shakib played a match-winning knock of 96*, guiding his side to a four-wicket victory.
