Sunil Gavaskar snubs Virat Kohli & Jasprit Bumrah; Names India's best performer at ICC T20 World Cup 2024

Sunil Gavaskar also praised Jasprit Bumrah for winning Player of the Tournament award.

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has snubbed Player of the Final Virat Kohli and Player of the Tournament Jasprit Bumrah while naming India’s best performer at the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit Sharma-led India had an unbeaten run throughout the tournament and won the title defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final. India became first ever team to win the tournament undefeated.

With the win, Rohit-led side also ended India’s 11-year-long ICC title drought. Rohit also became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to lift the T20 World Cup trophy. Dhoni won the championship back in the inaugural edition in 2007.

Notably, Indian veteran cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli were two of the main heroes in helping their side defeat South Africa in the grand finale of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Kohli was adjudged Player of the Match for his phenomenal 76 runs, which helped India post a good total. It is also to be noted that Kohli’s 76 is the highest individual score by an Indian batter in T20 World Cup finals.

The 30-year-old Bumrah had match figures of 2/18 in his quota of four overs and helped India make a stunning comeback in the last five overs, where he bowled his last two crucial overs.

Bumrah was also awarded Player of the Tournament trophy for his dream run in the T20 World Cup 2024. The India speedster took 15 wickets with an economy of below five.

In a recent interaction with Sports Today, legendary cricketer Gavaskar praised Bumrah that he totally deserved to win Player of the Tournament award, but he snubbed him and named Rohit as the standout performer of the tournament.

Gavaskar praised Rohit and added that he was the man, who was running the show at the T20 World Cup 2024. Gavaskar further added that Rohit’s captaincy has to be admired because he never put his body language down during tense situations throughout the tournament.

“There were several. If you have a look at what this team did, they were champions in every different field. So while there was ‘Player of the Tournament’. Jasprit Bumrah, who absolutely totally deserved to be the ‘Player of the Tournament’, the main man running the show was Rohit Sharma. So Rohit’s captaincy is something that has to be admired because never once during tense situations did his body language go down,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.

“Yes, we have all got used to some of his grimaces and stuff like that, but that’s okay…The way he handled the situation when it was not looking good for India, that is deserving of the highest praise. That is why his captaincy was the standout Indian performance of the tournament for me,” he added.
