Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed the West Indies bowlers following the Ahmedabad test.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticised the West Indies pacers following their poor performance in the first test against Indian Cricket Team in Ahmedabad. Gavaskar said that the West Indies bowlers looked more like net bowlers than international ones.

The West Indies faced a humiliating defeat by an innings and 140 runs in the first test at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, they were bowled out for 162 runs in the first innings before conceding 448 runs to the hosts before they declared their innings.

Later in the second innings, the visitors were bowled out for 146 run, losing the game by a huge margin of an innings and 140 runs. The match ended in two and a half days as the visitors completely struggled against the hosts.

Sunil Gavaskar slams West Indies bowlers

In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar said that the West Indies pacers looked more like net bowlers than international ones. He also slammed them for not using bouncers effectively during the clash.

“In Ahmedabad, apart from Jayden Seales, the other two were simply trundlers, who looked more like net bowlers than international ones. No disrespect intended to them, but to see the first bouncer being bowled after half a dozen overs had been bowled made one ask, ‘Is this really the West Indies pace attack?’, he wrote

“Yes, bowling bouncers is a big effort, and on a hot day, it can take a lot out of a bowler, but it is a surprise weapon to stop the batter from moving on to the front foot regularly,” Gavaskar added.

The cricketer-turned-commentator also added that the West Indies lack quality batters like they used to have in the past.

“For a team that once boasted of the likes of the Three Ws, Rohan Kanhai, Seymour Nurse, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, to name just a few, there is simply nobody in this current team who looks like getting a million country miles close to them,” he wrote.

“Of course, I haven’t forgotten the incomparable Garfield Sobers, Viv Richards and the ‘Prince of Trinidad’, Brian Lara. They are geniuses born once in a century and were way above normal human beings,” he added.

Notably, none of the West Indies batters could score a half-century across both innings of the first test. Ahead of the series, key pacers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph were ruled out due to injuries. The second test between both sides will start on October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. India lead the two-match test series 1-0.
