India are set to play the ICC WTC final against Australia starting 7th June, 2023.

After a hat-trick of wins, Mumbai Indians have failed to capitalise on the positives they got. MI were beaten by Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans in their last two back-to-back games. On Tuesday, Mumbai suffered a heavy defeat by 55 runs against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.  Mumbai Indians are not at their best since the IPL 2022. In 21 games, they have managed to win only 7. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has now suggested MI captain Rohit Sharma to keep himself out of the action and just focus on the big ICC Event scheduled in June. He had also suggested that Mumbai need to bring some changes in their batting.

Sunil Gavaskar suggests Rohit Sharma to take a breather

Mumbaikar and Former legendary Indian batter, Sunil Gavaskar has asked Rohit Sharma to step aside for a while. He said, “I would like to see some change in the batting order… Honestly, I would also say that Rohit should maybe also take a break for the time being, and keep himself fit for the World Test Championship Final, come back again for the last few matches, but right now, take a little bit of a breather”. Mumbai Indians are currently struggling to reach the top 4 in the points table.

The ICC World Test Championship final against Australia will begin on 7th June, just 10 days after IPL final on 28th May. Team India will have a week to adjust to The Oval and early English summer conditions. Rohit has failed to convert his starts into a big score this season. Apart from his 65 runs inning against Delhi Capitals, he has failed to convert his 20s into a big score. Thrice in the 7 innings he was out between 20-30 in the IPL 2023. He has scored 181 runs for Mumbai Indians in 7 innings.

Sunil Gavaskar also feels that Rohit Sharma is currently in two minds between the WTC final and Indian Premier League. Sunil Gavaskar said, “He is looking just that little bit preoccupied, Maybe at this stage, he is thinking about the WTC… But I do believe that at this stage he needs a little bit of a break”. Mumbai Indians will play their next game against Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede Stadium on 30th April.
