Sunil Gavaskar took a dig at Pakistan team over their flop show against India.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar took a dig at the Pakistan team following their defeat against Suryakumar Yadav & Co. in Asia Cup 2025. Gavaskar said that the current Pakistan team looks like a ‘popatwadi’ team. Notably, Popatwadi is an Indian term used in local cricket for weak teams.

India crushed Pakistan by seven wickets in the sixth match of Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday, September 14. Pakistan skipper Salman Agha won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. The Men in Green lost their opener Saim Ayub for a duck on the very first delivery, followed by Mohammad Haris’ wicket in the second over.

Losing most of their key batters cheaply, Pakistan eventually managed to score 127/9. However, India chased down the target like a walk in the park in 15.5 overs, with an unbeaten 47-run knock by Suryakumar Yadav. Saim Ayub clinched three wickets, while other Pakistan bowlers failed to make an impact.

Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Gavaskar trolled Pakistan following their poor show in the match. Gavaskar, one of the commentators in Asia Cup 2025, said that the current Pakistan team looks like a ‘popatwadi team’.

“I don’t know whether Ajay [Jadeja], Viru [Virender Sehwag] or Irfan [Pathan] agree with me, but I have been following the Pakistan team from the 1960s. I remember I had once run all the way from Churchgate Station to the Wankhede Stadium to catch a glimpse of the great Hanif Mohammad”, he said.

“From there, I have watched Pakistan cricket keenly. But today is the first time I felt that this is not a Pakistan team. Yeh koi Popatwadi team hai (This is some Popatwadi team),” he added.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav clinched a three-wicket haul in the match and won Player of the Match award for the second time in a row. With four points, India enjoy the peak position in Group A points table. They will play their last match of the group stage against Oman on September 19.

Pakistan are scheduled to face UAE on September 17 in Dubai. Ahead of the India game, they defeated Oman in their opening game by 93 runs.
