Sunil Narine recently made his maiden T20 century in his 504th match in ongoing IPL 2024.

Former West Indies cricketer Sunil Narine has given a verdict on the possibility of him coming out of retirement to play in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which will be hosted in the West Indies and the USA in June this year.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener, who last played for the West Indies in August 2019 and declared his retirement in November 2023, hinted at a return to the national team after recording his first T20 hundred in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

“It is what it is but we will have to see what the future holds,” he had told the broadcaster in a sideline chat.

Even West Indies T20I captain Rovman Powell admitted that he had been “whispering in the ears” of Narine to come out of retirement for almost 12 months.

“For the last 12 months, I have been whispering in his ears. but he’s blocked out everyone. I’ve asked [Kieron] Pollard, [Dwayne] Bravo, [Nicholas] Pooran. Hopefully, before they select the team, they can crack his code,” Powell said when asked about trying to convince Narine to reverse his decision.

Sunil Narine closes the door on West Indies return for T20 World Cup

Sunil Narine was part of the West Indies team that won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and from 51 T20Is, he has picked up 52 wickets at 21.25 and 6.01 with a career-best of 4-12. He has been in very good form for KKR with both the ball and the bat.

However, Sunil Narine in a social media post, has closed the doors on returning to international cricket for the T20 World Cup.

“I’m truly flattered and humbled that my performances recently have moved many people to publicly express their wish for me to come out of retirement and play in the upcoming T20 World Cup. “I have made peace with that decision and whilst I never wish to disappoint, that door is now closed and I will be supporting the guys who take the field in June for West Indies.

Guys who have worked hard for the past few months and deserve to show our wonderful fans that they are capable of winning another title – I wish you all the best,” Narine posted.
