Suryakumar Yadav becomes 13th player to lead India in T20Is; Checkout full list of Indian T20I captains

Suryakumar Yadav is leading Indian cricket team for the first time in his career.

Just three days after India’s World Cup final debacle against Australia at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, team India have resumed their T20I campaign against Australia at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to bat first in the first T20I game. Suryakumar Yadav has now become the 13th player to lead Indian cricket team in the T20I format. 

This is the first assignment of Suryakumar Yadav as Indian team captain. Suryakumar Yadav has so far led Mumbai Indians team in his career in just one game and came out as a winner. Suryakumar Yadav is now among the few legendary Indian cricket players who went on to lead the side in cricket’s shortest format. After the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, BCCI has appointed 5 different captains in the T20I side. 

Virender Sehwag was the inaugural leader of Indian T20I side against South Africa in 2006. He led team India in just one T20I game. After Sehwag, MS Dhoni took over Indian captaincy and led team India in 72 T20I matches. Team India under MS Dhoni went on to win the T20 World Cup in 2007 played in South Africa. After MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the other two skippers who have led India in more than 50 T20I games.

13. Suryakumar Yadav – 1* Match

Suryakumar Yadav has played 53 T20I games in his career and scored 1841 runs at an outstanding average of 46.02, his strike rate is also magnificent, and scored 172.70. Surya has smashed 3 centuries and 15 fifties in his career. Australia have decided to go with Steve Smith as opener for the five-match T20I series against India due to David Warner’s absence.
