Watch: Groundsmen make announcement as Suryakumar Yadav wins best fielder medal after IND vs NED CWC 2023 clash

Suryakumar Yadav won the gold medal due to his brilliant saves in the game.

The Indian cricket team’s outlook has been immensely impressive in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The newly inducted fielding medal award has brought many changes to the Indian team and made the players more proactive in the field. This has raised the standard of fielding in an already dominant Indian camp. Middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav has now earned the most coveted ‘Gold Medal’ inside the Indian camp for his fielding efforts.

Indian fielding coach T Dilip has been introducing new ideas after every game to announce the winner of the award. After India’s encounter against the Netherlands at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the groundsman of the Chinnaswamy Stadium announced the winner with a special gesture to award the medal to India’s gun fielder Suryakumar Yadav. Dilip’s idea brought the Indian camp and groundsmen together.

Rahul, Jadeja, SKY were the contenders

Indian wicket-keeper KL Rahul, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and Suryakumar were shortlisted as contenders for the award. It was also a unique idea from the Indian team management as they announced the winner replicating the third umpire’s decision on the big screen of Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India’s throwdown specialist Nuwan Seneviratne was chosen to award Suryakumar Yadav ‘Gold Medal’ in the Indian camp.

Ishan Kishan was sure about Suryakumar Yadav as he made several great saves in the outfield against Netherlands. Suryakumar Yadav didn’t get much time to bat as India’s top-order were in joyous mode batting first. Surya came into bat in the final ball after KL Rahul departed after scoring 105 runs. He scored 2 runs in the last balls. Later on, he was also tested as India’s possible 6th bowling option in Hardik Pandya’s absence and bowled two overs.

India defeated the Netherlands by 160 runs in the game after posting 410 on the board. The Netherlands managed to score 250 runs against India. Indian captain Rohit Sharma (61), Shubman Gill (51) and Virat Kohli (51) scored half-centuries for India. This was the first-ever occasion for India when top 5 batters went on to score 50+. Shreyas Iyer scored a magnificent century along with KL Rahul, they added 208 runs for the 4th wicket.
