Suryakumar Yadav took a sensational catch in the last over of the T20 World Cup 2024 final.
Suryakumar Yadav has confidently claimed that his catch to dismiss David Miller in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final was a fair one.
With 16 runs needed off six balls in the final for South Africa, Yadav took a terrific catch of Miller at long-off of Hardik Pandya’s bowling. Miller smacked a low full toss from Pandya down the ground and it would have gone for a six if not for Suryakumar’s interception.
Yadav grabbed the ball and lobbed it in the air as his momentum took him over the boundary skirting. He put a couple of steps outside the boundary cushion but got back inside the playing field quickly to complete the catch.
I was cautious that my feet don’t touch the rope: Suryakumar Yadav
After the final, a few images went viral on social media which sparked a debate as to whether Suryakumar’s foot had touched the boundary line. The India batter has claimed that it was a clean catch.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav said, “When I pushed the ball (up and inside the playing area) and took the catch, I knew I hadn’t touched the rope. The only thing I was cautious about was that when I pushed the ball back inside, my feet don’t touch the rope. I knew it was a fair catch. In hindsight, anything could have happened. If the ball had gone for six, the equation would have been five balls, 10 runs. We might have still won, but the margin would have been closer.”
He said that once Miller hit the ball in the air towards him, he was certain to go after the catch.
“The catch I took, I have practised it at different grounds, depending on the wind. I was standing a bit wide because Hardik and Rohit bhai had put a field for the wide yorker and Miller had hit straight. My mind was clear that I have to catch it come what may,” Yadav added.
