Suryakumar Yadav will be next seen playing in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament for Mumbai.
Ahead of the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, the BCCI selection committee named Indian stalwart Suryakumar Yadav as the new full-time T20I captain. Suryakumar didn’t disappoint the selectors as his side whitewashed hosts Sri Lanka 3-0 in the three-match T20I series in Pallekele.
However, the BCCI selection committee didn’t include Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI squad, which India lost 2-0 against Sri Lanka. Regarding the exclusion from the ODI squad, Ajit Agarkar said that Suryakumar wasn’t in their ODI plans for the moment. Suryakumar’s last ODI came in the World Cup final last year.
Recently, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) announced that the All India Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament will be played from August 15 to September 11. The tournament will be played in four-day format.
Suryakumar initially was not part of the Mumbai squad for the upcoming Buchi Babu tournament, but has now changed his decision. The 33-year-old has informed the Mumbai selectors of his availability for the second half of the tournament.
Yadav will play under middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan.
Want to play for India in all three formats: Suryakumar Yadav
The 33-year-old Suryakumar made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2021 and his test debut against Australia in 2023.
However, the right-handed batter couldn’t replicate his T20I success in the ODI and test cricket. In 37 ODIs, Surya has scored 773 runs at an average of 25. In one test, he scored just eight runs.
Recently, Suryakumar stated that he wants to represent India in all three formats. He added that the upcoming Buchi Babu Tournament will be a good chance for him to practice for the upcoming first-class season.
“I want to play for India in all three formats. Playing in Buchi Babu will give me good practice for the red-ball tournaments this season,” Suryakumar Yadav said to Times of India.
The 32-year-old last played First-Class (FC) cricket in the Duleep Trophy in July 2023. Overall, Suryakumar has played 82 FC matches and has scored 5628 runs at an average of 43.62. He has 29 half-centuries and 14 centuries to his name.
