Suryakumar Yadav named captain as India announce 15-man squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

Shubman Gill will be Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for India’s upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Thursday, July 18, announced a 15-member squad for three-match away T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Following retirement of Rohit Sharma from T20I cricket, the selectors have appointed Suryakumar Yadav as captain of the Indian side in the shortest format. Hardik Pandya, who previously led the side and was vice-captain of the side as well when they lifted ICC T20 World Cup 2024, has been snubbed from the leadership group, as Shubman Gill has been handed vice-captaincy of the side.

Youngsters Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been included in the side as two openers, while two other youngsters, who performed well in the recently-concluded T20I tour of Zimbabwe, Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad, have been left out of the squad.

The middle-order comprises of captain Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Riyan Parag and Rinku Singh. The squad also includes four all-rounders – Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. The bowling attack comprises of Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Ravi Bishnoi and Khaleel Ahmed. Kuldeep Yadav, who was instrumental in India’s campaign at ICC T20 World Cup last month, has been left out of the T20I side.
