Suryakumar Yadav equals Virat Kohli's record for most Man of the Match awards in T20I cricket

Suryakumar Yadav scored 53 runs off 28 balls against Afghanistan in their Super 8 encounter in Barbados.

Suryakumar Yadav registered a second consecutive half-century in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 to help India thump Afghanistan in their Super 8 encounter.

In their first Super 8 match, India defeated Afghanistan by a significant margin of 47 runs on Thursday at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Suryakumar and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah starred in the match.

Yadav scored 53 runs off 28 balls. His partnership of 60 (37) with Hardik Pandya was crucial for India after they were in a precarious position at 90/4.

India posted 181 on the board, which they successfully defended courtesy of a stunning three-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah returned with mind-boggling figures of 4-1-7-3, while Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh combined to take five wickets.

The number 1 ranked men’s ICC T20I batter, Suryakumar equalled Virat Kohli’s tally of most Man of the Match awards in T20Is. Both have 15 Man of the Match awards in the shortest international format. However, while Kohli took 120 games to win 15 MOTM awards, Suryakumar earned the same number of awards in only 64 T20Is.

Bagging the MOTM award, Suryakumar said, “I think there’s a lot of hardwork, there are a lot of processes and routine involved in it. I am clear in my mind what I want to do. I don’t mind giving this Player of the Match to a bowler. First time it’s going to a batter (from India in this tournament), I don’t mind. I think you just need to know your game plan, and just play accordingly. I still remember when Hardik came in to the bat, I told him let’s bat with the same intent. Let’s keep pressing the pedal and keep pushing, in the end very happy with a score of 180.”
