Suryakumar Yadav smashed 53 runs against Afghanistan in Super 8 clash at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

World No. 1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav played a match-winning knock against Afghanistan during the Super 8 (Group 1) clash at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on June 20 in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

After opting to bat first on a slow surface, India opener Virat Kohli (24) and wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant (20) got starts, but couldn’t convert them into the big innings.

Suryakumar once again showed his class against Afghanistan as he smashed 53 runs off just 28 balls, which included five boundaries and three sixes. Men in Blue Vice-Captain Hardik Pandya played a critical knock of 32 runs, which helped them reach 181-8 in 20 overs.

While defending 182 runs, Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh scalped three wickets each. While leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets as they bundled out Afghanistan for 134 runs and clinched the match by 47 runs. The 33-year-old Suryakumar was adjudged the player of the match for his brilliant half-century.

Suryakumar Yadav names Rashid Khan as the best bowler

During the match, Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan had a great outing with the ball. The star leg spinner had match figures of 3/26 in his quota of four overs. During his spell, Rashid picked up three wickets from Indian batters, which included — skipper Rohit Sharma, veteran batter Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant.

Speaking after the match, world No. 1 T20I batter Suryakumar was full of praises for the Afghan skipper Rashid and named him as the world’s best bowler. Suryakumar further added that a player can’t dominate Rashid easily, and you have to take chances against the leg spinner.

“I have told this before as well and I’ll say that again on air when he bowls, it’s very difficult to pick him so I know what shots I want to play when I’m inside. Best bowler in the world. You can’t let him dominate. You have to be a step ahead. But I am happy to be on a better side today,” said Suryakumar Yadav.

After winning the match against Afghanistan, the Rohit Sharma-led India are all set to take on Bangladesh in their second match in the Super 8 of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

The match will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on June 22. A victory against Bangladesh will almost book Men in Blue’s place in the semi-finals of the ongoing ICC tournament.
