Will Suryakumar Yadav announce his retirement after T20 World Cup 2026?

Suryakumar Yadav is captaining India in T20 World Cup 2026.

Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, Indian Cricket Team have shown a spectacular performance in T20 World Cup 2026. The Men-in-Blue have booked a berth in the final against New Zealand and are just one step away from becoming champions for the third time in the tournament’s history.

Although Suryakumar has done a decent job as a leader, he has completely struggled to make a mark with the bat. The right-handed batsman started the tournament with a match-winning 84* runs against USA but failed to impress in the upcoming games.

Barring the opening clash, the Indian captain has failed to cross the 40-run mark in other matches. With 242 runs in eight games at an average of 34.37 and a strike rate of 137.50, the 35-year-old has failed to showcase the aggressive batting style that he is known for.

Suyakumar Yadav does not play test cricket and his ODI comeback is far from away. Moreover, his form in T20Is has dropped in recent times, which is quite evident in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

With him being only a one format player and his form in that format being poor too, he surely will be under scanner once the T20 World Cup ends. Also, with Shreyas Iyer in wings, chances are that Suryakumar Yadav might. Some unverified reports have also suggested the same.

Notably, Yadav has done a wonderful job as a captain since July 2024 as India have not lost a single T20I series under his leadership. However, as seen in the past, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has always been reluctant to allow anyone to continue playing purely on the basis of captaincy.

He suffered a big dip in his form last year, scoring 218 runs in 21 games at an average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123.16. Since the start of 2026, he has slammed 484 runs in 13 games at an average of 48.40 and a strike rate of 161.87.

Although Surya has hammered four fifties this year, his batting woes in a big tournament like T20 World Cup have caught the attention of many fans and pundits.
