ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Shoriful Islam doubtful for Bangladesh's opening encounter against Sri Lanka

Shoriful Islam got injured in the warm-up match against India.

The Bangladesh cricket team suffered a massive dent ahead of their opening game against Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 7 as left-arm speedster Shoriful Islam might miss the game against Lanka in Dallas after picking up hand injury against India in the warm-up fixture.

Ahead of their first match against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh played against India in a warm-up match in New York on June 1.

After opting to bat first, the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue scored 182/5 in 20 overs. Rishabh Pant played a blistering knock of 53 runs in 32 balls and was retired out. Vice-captain Hardik Pandya provided the finishing touch with his quick-fire 23-ball 40*, which helped India go past the 180-run mark.

While defending 183, Indian bowlers were on top of Bangaldesh throughout. Eventually, India won by 60 runs.

With the ball, Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube bagged two wickets each, while Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel took one scalp each.

Shoriful Islam suffered injury during India vs Bangladesh warm-up fixture

Bangladesh seamer Shoriful had a good outing with the ball against India as he gave away 26 runs in 3.5 overs and took the wicket of Sanju Samson. However, he couldn’t complete his spell of four overs as he sustained an injury to his left hand when Hardik smashed his yorker straight towards him.

Shoriful was then quickly taken off the field, as his left palm was spotted swollen following the impact with the ball. Later, it was found that the Bangladeshi pacer received six stitches between his left palm and the index finger.

It has been learned that Shoriful needs at least one week to recover from his injury and he is all but confirmed to miss Bangladesh’s first group game against Sri Lanka on June 7 in Dallas.

It is to be noted that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) hasn’t made any official statement yet about Shoriful’s injury. If indeed Islam gets ruled out of the tournament, then Bangladesh have pacer Hasan Mahmud as a travelling reserve with them.
