Gautam Gambhir was appointed as India’s head coach on July 9, 2024.

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has been under scrutiny for the past few months. Gambhir was appointed as the head coach last July amid immense hype following his success as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League 2024.

His tenure, however, has been far from convincing. The problems began in August when the Men in Blue lost a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka by 2-0. Things went downhill in test cricket with India suffering a 3-0 defeat against New Zealand at home, followed by a 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia.

Adding to the problems, several news reports have suggested rifts within the Indian team. India are now scheduled to play a five-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series against England before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Amid growing concerns, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has expressed confidence in Gambhir, stating that the T20I team is heading in the right direction under the former opener.

Speaking to the media ahead of India’s first T20I against England in Kolkata, Suryakumar Yadav highlighted his strong bond with head coach Gautam Gambhir. He asserted his feeling that the team is moving in the right direction with him.

Suryakumar said, “I’ve played under Gambhir for four years, so I know how he works. Even without speaking to him, we know what we need to do. He wasn’t there on the tour of South Africa since he was preparing with the test team, but we are moving in the right direction with him.

He emphasized the freedom the Indian coach gives to the players, allowing them to express themselves.

He added, “He gives freedom, he allows players to express. He keeps things simple, he knows what is going inside a player’s head. He keeps things light and maintains a good atmosphere.
