There have been 24 instances of a team getting bundled out under 50 runs in test cricket.

The IND vs NZ 1st test in Bengaluru is tantalizingly poised and has got everyone gripping. What looked like a lost test match for the hosts after day 2 at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, has come to life through India’s dominating batting display in their second innings.

The match started on its official day 2 because the first scheduled day was washed out completely. Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, won the toss and elected to bat first and saw his side get blown away for only 46 runs as Matt Henry, Tim Southee and William O’Rourke claimed all 10 wickets.

This was India’s third-lowest innings total in test cricket and their lowest at home. New Zealand piled up more misery on the hosts by scoring 402 runs, putting India under a deficit of 356 runs.

However, despite the pressure, the batsmen came out swinging and batted aggressively to turn the tables on the Kiwis. Rohit and Jaiswal put on a stand of 72 runs in 17 overs before getting dismissed in succession.

Then came the more entertaining plays of the innings as Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan added 136 runs in 163 balls before Kohli got out on the last ball of day 3. India continued with their momentum as Pant joined Sarfaraz and they whacked 113* off 132 balls to bring down the deficit to only 12 runs by lunch on day 4.

Has any team won a test cricket match after getting all out under 50 in an innings?

There have been 24 instances of a team getting bowled out under 50 runs in test cricket, and only once has a side gone on to win the test match despite recording a score lower than 50. This happened in the 1887 Ashes at the Sydney Cricket Ground where England, even after being bundled for only 45 runs in their first innings, won the test match by 13 runs.

In a low-scoring game, England set Australia a target of 111 and managed to knock the hosts out for 97 to clinch a historic win.

This is the only occurrence so far in test cricket’s 147-year history where a side emerged victorious despite being bowled out for under 50.
