Sarfaraz Khan had a first-class average of 69 before the 1st IND vs NZ test match in Bengaluru.

With a backfoot punch through the covers for a boundary off Tim Southee, Sarfaraz Khan fulfilled not just the dream of himself and his family, but also of those vast number of fans who had been championing his name for the past few years while he was piling up runs in domestic cricket but couldn’t get the nod in the national side.

In his fourth test match, Sarfaraz, who had three fifties in his first three tests, notched up his maiden test century in the 1st IND vs NZ test match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. To think that Sarfaraz wouldn’t have played this test if not for Shubman Gill’s neck stiffness is utterly mind-boggling.

By lunch on day 4 of the ongoing test, Sarfaraz is 125* off 154 balls, scored with the help of 16 fours and three sixes. He has formed two highly entertaining partnerships with Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, while matching both senior players shot for shot, and has brought India to almost parity now.

India had conceded a first-innings deficit of 356 runs. Not only Sarfaraz Khan’s century has helped the side bring down that deficit but also has put India in a position where they can give New Zealand a target of at least 150 if others in the lower-order contribute as well as the top-order have done in this innings.

His stand with Kohli was worth 136 (163) and his stand with Pant is 113* (132); the duo are at the crease by lunch on day 4, having dominated a wicketless first session on Saturday.

Sarfaraz’s century led to a huge celebration among fans, experts, cricketers and ex-cricketers. Check out some tweets here.
