Top 10 teams with most individual centuries (100) in test cricket
Four countries have notched up over 500 individual centuries in test cricket.
Test cricket is the toughest format of the three international formats a cricketer’s entire skillset gets tested for multiple days.
Australia and England played the first-ever test match in 1877. Since then, England have played the most number of test matches. There are 12 test-playing nations at the moment, two of which, Ireland and Afghanistan, made their debuts in this format in 2018.
In test cricket, a batsman needs to have the skills, range, patience, and determination to bat long to grind opposition bowlers and record a century.
On that note, let’s take a look at the top 10 teams with the most individual centuries in test cricket.
Teams with most individual test centuries:
10. Zimbabwe – 64 centuries
Zimbabwe played their first-ever test match in 1992. While they were a potent unit in the 1990s and early 2000s, they have been on a decline in the past two decades and have been struggling to find success in the longest format.
Zimbabwe have played 118 test matches, and 129 players have featured in it. 64 test centuries have been notched up by Zimbabwean batsmen. Andy Flower (12) scored the most test tons for Zimbabwe.
9. Bangladesh – 82 centuries
Bangladesh cricket team made their test debut in 2000. They played their first-ever test match against the Indian cricket team, which they lost.
Although Bangladesh have had many quality and talented cricketers, the country hasn’t been a consistent winner in test cricket.
Bangladesh have played 148 tests, and 105 players have represented the nation in tests. A total of 82 test centuries have been recorded by Bangladesh. Mominul Haque (13) has scored most centuries for Bangladesh in tests.
8. Sri Lanka – 307 centuries
From the great Kumar Sangakkara to the classical Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka are known for producing elegant batsmen.
The Island Nation made their test debut against England in Colombo in 1982. Since then, 167 players have represented them in 321 tests till now. Sri Lanka batsmen have slammed 307 centuries in the longest format. A total of 13 Sri Lankan cricketers have hit over 10 test tons with Kumar Sangakkara (38) and Mahela Jayawardene (34) leading the way.
7. New Zealand – 332 centuries
New Zealand are one of the consistent sides in world cricket. The Black Caps also won the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 by defeating the Indian cricket team in the final.
New Zealand played their first-ever test match in 1930. Since then, the Black Caps have played 474 matches and won 116 till now. New Zealand batsmen have registered 332 test centuries so far. Kane Williamson has scored most (32) tons for the Kiwis in test cricket.
6. South Africa – 395 centuries
South Africa have been one of the most dangerous sides in test cricket since the 1990s. The Proteas made their debut in the longest format in 1889.
Since then, they have played 467 matches and emerged victorious on 180 occasions. South African batsmen have recorded 395 centuries in the longest format. Five South African batsmen have hit more than 20 centuries with Jacques Kallis topping the list with 45 tons.
5. Pakistan – 433 centuries
Pakistan cricket team played their first test match in 1952. So far, 257 players have played for them in test cricket.
Pakistan have won 150 tests out of 461 they have played yet. 433 test centuries have been made by Pakistani batsmen. Legendary cricketer Younis Khan has scored the most centuries (34) for his country in test cricket.
4. West Indies – 501 centuries
The West Indies were the most dominant and fearsome team in the world in the 1970s and 1980s but they fell off since the late 1990s. The team included legendary cricketers like Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards, Garfield Sobers, and many more.
West Indies have played 580 test matches till now, out of which they won 183 games and lost 214 matches. The West Indies batsmen have notched 501 centuries in test cricket. Brian Lara scored 34 test centuries, which is the most by any West Indies batsman.
3. India – 550 centuries
The Indian cricket team are one of the powerhouses in world cricket. The Asian Giants have been blessed with a spate of talented batsmen across all eras.
Talking about test cricket, India have played 583 games till now, winning 180 games out of them.
Indian batsmen have notched up 550 test centuries, with legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar (51) scoring the most test hundreds in the world.
2. Australia – 892 centuries
Australia are joint-oldest test-playing nation. Australia are the most successful team in test cricket history. They also won the ICC World Test Championship 2021–23 under Pat Cummins’ leadership.
Australia have won the most test matches till now. Out of 866 tests, they have clinched 414 victories.
Australian batsmen have hammered 892 centuries so far. Former captain Ricky Ponting (41) has made the most test centuries for his nation.
1. England – 927 centuries
England were involved in the first test match in 1877 with Australia. The Three Lions are the only test side in the world to play more than 1000 test matches. They have played 1080 games and won 398, which is the second-most after Australia.
England batsmen have also notched 927 centuries, which is the most by any country in test cricket. Former captain Joe Root (35) has slammed the most test hundreds for his nation.
