The first edition of the ICC Champions Trophy was played in 1998.
The ICC Champions Trophy, previously known as the ICC Knockout Trophy, began in 1998, with the inaugural edition taking place in Bangladesh. The tournament was started with the aim to raise funds for developing the game in non-test-playing countries.
Over the years, the competition has established a reputation as one of the most reputed ICC tournaments. Top teams from around the world participate in what is a short competition, making every game crucial for progress in the tournament.

7. Sri Lanka – 1 (2002)
Sri Lanka are one of the seven teams to have won the ICC Champions Trophy. Sri Lanka clinched their maiden ICC Champions Trophy title in the 2002 edition when they hosted it. Placed in Pool 4, Sri Lanka advanced to the semi-finals with a perfect record of two wins in two games.
Sri Lanka knocked out Australia by seven wickets in their semi-final clash in Colombo. Chasing 163, Marvan Atapattu played a crucial 51-run knock.
Sri Lanka were declared joint winners alongside India after rain washed out their final on both the scheduled day and reserve day of the match.
6. Pakistan – 1 (2017)
Pakistan won their maiden ICC Champions Trophy when they defeated arch-rivals India in the final of the 2017 edition. They finished second in the group stage and qualified for the semi-finals.
In the semi-final, Pakistan defeated hosts England by eight wickets before thumping India by 180 runs in the final. Fakhar Zaman led the charge in the final, scoring 114 off 106 balls, while Mohammad Amir dented India with 3/16. It remains their only Champions Trophy title.
5. West Indies – 1 (2004)
West Indies’ only ICC Champions Trophy triumph came in the 2004 edition, which was held in England.
They knocked out Pakistan in the semi-final and then defeated England in a nail-biting final in London. Chasing 218 in the final, West Indies stumbled to 147/8 before lower-order batters Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw stitched an unbeaten 71-run stand for the ninth wicket to clinch the trophy.
Ian Bradshaw was named Player of the Match.
4. South Africa – 1 (1998)
South Africa won the first edition of the ICC Champions Trophy (then ICC Knockout Trophy) in 1998, held in Bangladesh. The Proteas reached the final by defeating England by six wickets in the quarter-final, before eliminating Sri Lanka in the semi-final by 92 runs.
In the final, they faced West Indies and chased down a tricky 246-run target to seal the win. Jacques Kallis was named Player of the Match for scoring 37 runs and taking five wickets in the final.
3. New Zealand – 1 (2000)
New Zealand defeated India by four wickets in the final of the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy to clinch the title in Nairobi. The Kiwis knocked out Zimbabwe in the quarter-final before edging past Pakistan by four wickets in the semi-final.
They faced India in the final and seemed on the brink of defeat at 132/5 in a run chase of 265. Chris Cairns then joined Chris Harris and they stitched a 122-run partnership for the sixth wicket to seal the title. Cairns was named Player of the Match for his match-winning hundred in the summit clash.
2. Australia – 2 (2006, 2009)
Australia are one of the two teams to win the ICC Champions Trophy twice and are the only team to win back-to-back ICC Champions Trophy titles.
Australia’s maiden Champions Trophy title came in the 2006 edition, where they ended the group stage with two wins and a loss. They then beat New Zealand by 34 runs in the semi-final and West Indies by eight wickets in the final to clinch the trophy.
They repeated their heroics in the 2009 edition in India. The Aussies humiliated England by nine wickets in a one-sided semi-final before defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final. Shane Watson was named Player of the Match in both the finals.
1. India – 3 (2002, 2013, 2025)
After falling short in the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy final, India were the joint-winners of the 2002 edition alongside Sri Lanka as rain washed out their final on both the scheduled day and the reserve day in Colombo.
Their second title win in 2013 in England was much more convincing. They won all three group games to reach the semi-finals. They defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the semi-final and then went past hosts England by five runs in the rain-marred final which was reduced to 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was named Player of the Match for his 33 runs and two wickets in the game.
India’s third Champions Trophy title came in 2025 in Dubai. They repeated history as they won the title remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. They defeated Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage before outplaying Australia in the semi-finals and New Zealand in the final.
