New Zealand are the latest team to win a test series in India.

In test cricket, Team India’s performance at home over the last dozen years has been unmatchable as compared to other nations. The Asian Giants had thrashed every opponent at home in a test series from the loss to England in 2012 to their latest loss to New Zealand. This included a run of 18 consecutive test series wins.

But, not only in the last 12 years, India have been a dominant force to be reckoned with at home for a long time. They have lost only four home test series since the year 2000.

India’s strength at home has been their spinners and their famed batsmen who could do well on these tracks while the oppositions succumbed.

Only a few nations have managed to breach India’s fortress in test cricket. Registering a series victory on Indian soil is one of the biggest achievements in test cricket.

On that note, let’s take a look at the teams with the most test series wins against India in India.

Teams with most test series win against India in India:

6. New Zealand – 1 (2024)

New Zealand played their first-ever test series in India in 1995/96. It was a five-match test series which the hosts won 2-0. After multiple attempts, the Black Caps finally scripted history by winning their first-ever test series on Indian soil in 2024.

The Tom Latham-led New Zealand outclassed the Asian Giants in the first two tests of the three-match series. The visitors thrashed the hosts in the Bengaluru test (8 wickets) and Pune test (113 runs).

New Zealand also broke India’s 12-year-long test series winning streak at home.

5. South Africa – 1 (1999)

South Africa toured India for the first time in 1996/97 for a three-match test series, which they lost by a 1-2 scoreline.

The Proteas won their first test series in India when they toured for a two-match test series in 1999-2000. South Africa stunned the hosts in the opening test in Wankhede by four wickets, and then won the Bengaluru test by an innings and 74 runs.

South Africa whitewashed the Asian Giants 2-0.

4. Pakistan – 1 (1986)

Arch-rivals India and Pakistan played their first-ever test series in India in 1952/53. The Asian Giants won that five-match test series 2-1.

Pakistan’s only test series victory in India came in 1986-87, which was a five-match series. The first four tests were drawn and then Pakistan won the fifth test in Bengaluru by 16 runs.

3. Australia – 4 (1956, 1959, 1969, 2004)

The rivalry between India and Australia in test cricket is a treat to watch. Both nations have had legendary players who have put on competitive shows. In the last few years, the rivalry has become more intense between the nations.

Australia have registered four test series wins in India in 1956, 1959, 1969 and 2004. Australia’s last test series win on Indian soil came during their 2004 tour, where they defeated the Asian side by 2-1 in the four-match test series.

It’s been two decades, though, since Australia last won a test series in India.

2. West Indies – 5 (1948, 1958, 1966, 1974, 1983)

The West Indies dominated test cricket for decades in the 20th century. This included winning five test series in India in 1948, 1958, 1966, 1974 and 1983.

Their first-ever test series on Indian soil was in 1948–49. The visitors won that five-match test series 1-0. The West Indies’ last test series win in India was in 1983.

Since then, the West Indies have failed to register a single test series victory against India at the latter’s home turf.

1. England – 5 (1933, 1976, 1980, 1984, 2012)

The England cricket team have won five test series against India in India. Their first four test series victories came in 1933, 1976, 1980, and 1984.

Then, in 2012, the Alastair Cook-led England defeated MS Dhoni’s team by a 2-1 scoreline to register their first test series win in India after 28 years.

After the 2012 test series, though, England lost three consecutive series in India.
