Australia hold the record for winning most ICC trophies in senior men’s cricket.

The first-ever ICC tournament was held in 1975 when 8 teams participated in the ICC Cricket World Cup in England. Since then, a number of teams have won ICC trophies across formats in senior men’s cricket.

With the inclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup and World Test Championship, there is an ICC event almost every year, giving all teams more chances to win an ICC title.

But it takes a lot to win an ICC event, and some bigger teams have not yet gotten the taste of it even once. Meanwhile, there are a few other teams that have had success consistently in big events.

In this article, we will talk about the teams with the most ICC trophies in senior men’s cricket history. Notably, a total of 33 ICC events have taken place in men’s cricket till 30th June, 2024.

List of teams with most ICC trophies in senior men’s cricket

8. South Africa – 1 ICC Trophy

South Africa suffered a huge heartbreak recently when they lost the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against India, which could have been their second ICC title.

Not many know that South Africa have indeed won an ICC trophy. They won the 1998 Champions Trophy, which was then known as the ICC Knockout Trophy.

It was the first major ICC title for the Proteas and remains their only one so far. It was played in Bangladesh with a total of nine teams. In the final, South Africa beat West Indies by 4 wickets to win the title. Jacques Kallis was the Player of the Tournament.

7. New Zealand – 2 ICC Trophies

New Zealand have been a consistent side in ICC events in the past decade, but unfortunately, they have ended up on the wrong side of multiple ICC events. But the Black Caps have two ICC trophies in their kitty. Their first title was in 2000 when they won the Champions Trophy (ICC Knockout Trophy) hosted in Kenya.

They beat India in the final. Then, after 21 years, they beat India again in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship to lift their second ICC trophy.

6. Sri Lanka – 3 ICC Trophies

Sri Lanka had a golden period from the mid-1990s to 2015. They won three different ICC trophies during this period. First, Sri Lanka won the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996 under Arjuna Ranatunga’s captaincy, beating Australia in the final. It was hosted in the subcontinent.

Then, in the ICC Champions Trophy 2002, Sri Lanka faced India in the final, which was washed out, and both sides were announced joint winners. Later in 2014, Lasith Malinga-led Sri Lanka lift the ICC T20 World Cup title, beating India in the final.

5. Pakistan – 3 ICC Trophies

Pakistan are one of the most successful Asian teams in this game. But their trophy cabinet doesn’t do justice to the talent they have had over the years. They have won three ICC trophies so far. Their maiden title came under Imran Khan when they lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 trophy in Australia, beating England in the final.

They won their second title after 17 years in 2009. The Younis Khan-led team beat Sri Lanka in the final to lift the ICC T20 World Cup 2009 trophy. Later in 2017, they made history when they beat arch-rivals India to win the 2017 Champions Trophy under Sarfaraz Ahmed’s leadership.

4. England – 3 ICC Trophies

England were the ones that introduced the game of cricket to the world. But it took them over three decades to win their first ICC title after the inaugural ICC tournament in 1975. In 2010, they won their first ICC trophy when Paul Collingwood led England to lift the ICC T20 World Cup 2010, beating Australia in the final.

Then in 2019, Eoin Morgan-led side made history as England beat New Zealand in a close final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to lift their maiden men’s ODI World Cup trophy. Jos Buttler then led England to glory when they beat Pakistan in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 to win their third ICC trophy.

3. West Indies – 5 ICC Trophies

West Indies were once an unbeatable team in the world; they won the first two editions of the ICC Cricket World Cup. They won the 1975 edition, beating Australia in the final, and in 1979, they beat England in the final. These two wins came under Clive Lloyd’s captaincy.

West Indies’ third title came when they beat England in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 under Brian Lara’s leadership. They added two more ICC trophies to their cabinet in the shortest format. West Indies won the 2012 and 2016 ICC T20 World Cups under Darren Sammy’s captaincy to make it five in total.

2. India – 6 ICC Trophies

Team India are the second-most successful team in cricket history when it comes to most ICC trophies. India’s maiden ICC trophy came when Kapil Dev led the side to the ICC Cricket World Cup 1983 title beating the mighty West Indies in the final.

Then, after 21 years, under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, India ended the 2002 Champions Trophy as a joint-winners with Sri Lanka after the final was washed out due to rain.

After that, it was MS Dhoni’s era. Under him, India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. Dhoni is the only international captain to lead a country to these three different ICC titles.

Then, it took India another 11 years to win another ICC event. Rohit Sharma became the fourth Indian captain on this list. He led India to lift the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title.

Ponting also led Australia to lift the Champions Trophy twice in 2006 and 2009. Australia won their maiden ICC T20 World Cup in 2021 under Aaron Finch’s captaincy.

They made history in 2023 by winning the World Test Championship under Pat Cummins’ captaincy. They are the only team to win an ICC title across formats.
