Sri Lankan legendary batter and former skipper Mahela Jayawardene is the fifth captain on our list of Test captains with the highest average. He is on the list with an average of 59.11 as captain, followed by several other greats. 

4. Steve Smith 

Veteran Australian batter Steve Smith is fourth in the list, and the Australian great has delivered under every possible condition across the globe. Smith is fourth with a Test average of 68.07, captaining Australia in over 77 innings. 

3. Kumar Sangakkara 

Former Sri Lankan legendary batter Kumar Sangakkara is on the list just behind Shubman Gill. The Lankan great had averaged 69.90 in his career as a Test captain, which spanned over 26 innings. 

2. Shubman Gill

Gill has now moved into second place among Test captains with at times 1000 runs while boasting an amazing batting record unmatched among recently active players. 

The Indian skipper has scored 1150 runs across 18 innings while captaining India and currently averages 71.87 in his career, only behind the Australian legend Donald Bradman.

The greatest Test batter of all time, Sir Donald Bradman tops the list with an unmatched record. He stands at the top of the list with an extraordinary average of 101.51.
